Eva Christiane Barfred Stæhr-Nielsen (born Wilhjelm 30 July 1911 in Frederiksberg , died 26 April 1976 in Copenhagen) was a Danish ceramist.

She grew up in a creative environment. Her mother, Emma Sophie Barfred, was one of the first women to attend the Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Art for Women , but she did not work as an artist after she married. Her father, Axel Fasting Wilhjelm, was a trained bookseller. He later became the manager of the Danish Travel Agency. Eva's uncle was the painter Johannes Wilhjelm .

Eva Stæhr-Nielsen decided early on to become a ceramist, but her parents wanted her to take the student exam. She therefore started at Marie Kruse's School , but never completed it. In 1930 she was accepted as a student at the newly established School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. There she met the sculptor Olaf Stæhr-Nielsen , who was 15 years her senior and was the teacher of the ceramics class. He had a great influence on her life and artistic development. The two were married in 1935 and over the years had a life of mutual inspiration. They had two children together.

In 1932 Eva Stæhr-Nielsen began working at Nathalie Krebs ' workshop Saxbo . This workshop produced mass-produced stoneware of high artistic quality and became a leader both in Denmark and in Europe. She signed some of her products with "EW" for Eva Wilhjelm, even after she had married.

At first, Stæhr-Nielsen turned ashtrays after designs, but she soon found other uses for her talent. From 1932 to 1951, she was Saxbo's sole designer and came to leave her mark on the workshop's artistic profile. She designed, among other things, a teapot ( Kuglerund Tepotte ) and a vase ( Spaltekanden ) which were shown at an exhibition at the National Museum in Stockholm in 1933. Both products were produced at the workshop until 1968, when Saxbo closed.

Stæhr-Nielsen participated in many exhibitions at home and abroad, including at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Oslo (1934) and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Copenhagen (1935 and 1954).

She received several honors. In 1937 she received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris . At the Triennale in Milan she received an honorary diploma in 1954 and a gold medal in 1957. She also won awards in Japan and the United States.
